The Karlovy Vary Festival has traditionally fostered a cordial relationship with its stars, yet it is a rare and special occurrence when a celebrity also cherishes the bonds with the festival’s atmosphere and audiences, much like Woody Harrelson did. “And it’s truly amazing if a celebrity can spend the nine whole days with us as a member of the jury,” said moderator Saša Michailidis at the Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre on Sunday, introducing the actress Patricia Clarkson, who is returning to the festival after four years.
“I’m thinking of moving to Karlovy Vary so we can all hang out here together,” she told the audience during the introduction. “I’m delighted to present a film that is extremely close to my heart. It stars the incredible transgender actress Trace Lysette in a riveting lead role. Considering how current the topic of transgender rights is not only in my home country, your presence here is incredibly important to me,” she said before the screening of Monica, in which she stars alongside the said actress. “This film is about acceptance, forgiveness and above all love, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Just before the screening began, Michailidis reminded everyone that it was Patricia’s name day, prompting the entire hall to shower the American actress and producer with a heartfelt round of applause.
