Some of his most well-known works include his mosaic for the New York subway, and his huge tapestries at airports in Prague, Dublin and Cape Town.

Petr Sís has received many awards from around the world for his works – from a Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and a number of medals from the American Library Association, eight New York Times awards for Best Illustrated Book, to two Ragazzi Awards at the International Bologna Children’s Book Fair. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, and in 2012 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his life-time’s work.

In recent years, he has been co-operating with Amnesty International’s Art for Amnesty programme on a series of tapestries which have been produced to promote human rights and to honour major figures of modern history. The first to be unveiled was the Flying Man (Letící muž) tapestry at Prague Airport in honour of President Václav Havel in 2012.

The largest exhibition of his work so far, entitled On Flying and Other Dreams, organised in 2019 by the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague, was seen by almost 100 000 visitors.
