A picture of contemporary, industrial Brazil rises out of the main character’s journal entries – without the stereotypes of favelas and crime. On his travels to farms, construction projects, and factories, Cristiano represents the poorest, who have decided to work day after day, to go from town to town, taciturn, proud, and resilient.
This socially-minded movie finds a different Brazil than the stereotype associated with favelas and high crime rates. It presents an environment of industrial and agricultural operations and lodging houses while focusing on one of its heroes – the noble, animated, and tenacious Cristiano. Since being released from prison he has moved from job to job (he can’t imagine not working), needing only a roof over his head and a clean bed. The narrative frame gives the story pathos and authenticity. In a local theater group Cristiano is given the task of writing a short text about his life, but after beginning his tale he can’t stop at one event, and thus unfolds a story of his wanderings around contemporary Brazil. The picture began its trek through movie theaters with a premiere in the main competition at the Rotterdam festival. It then participated in the international competition in Cartagena and took an award in the international competition at the IndieLisboa fest. The film is the first for which Uchôa and Dumans have joined directing forces.

Affonso Uchôa (b. 1984, Contagem, Brazil) is a director, screenwriter, and festival curator. His debut Afternoon Woman (Mulher à tarde, 2010) received much attention. His second picture The Hidden Tiger (A Vizinhança do Tigre, 2014) won Best Film at Mostra de Tiradentes and received international recognition. Since 2009 Uchôa has participated in the selection of movies for festivals such as the International Short Film Festival of Belo Horizonte and Forum.doc. João Dumans (b. Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a screenwriter, director, and critic. His scripting debut Where I Grow Old (A Cidade onde Envelheço) competed at the Rotterdam IFF in 2016, and he earned screenwriting and editing credits on The Hidden Tiger (2014). He has curated and organized film exhibitions in Brazil and abroad (Constructing Views: Experimental Film and Video in Brazil – New Museum, NYC). He writes for journals, incl. Cinética and La Furia Umana.
