On the spur of the moment, the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker Tim Robbins took a selfie with the whole audience in the Great Hall before presenting his film Bob Roberts. Directed by Robbins himself, the 1992 film follows the rise of a country singer who runs for a seat in the U.S. Senate. “When we were shooting the film, we did not imagine that a successful businessman interested in beauty pageants could also succeed in politics. Well, you have been warned,” Robbins noted the topicality of his satirical mocumentary.
He then narrated to the audience his path to music and how he indeed became a singer thanks to Bob Roberts. He and his brother composed several folk songs for the film soundtrack, which they later recorded as a punk-rock cover. “We performed the songs with a band for several months and even played as forerunners for Pearl Jam - it was great fun. This inspired me to become an actual musician and I formed my own band eight years ago. Our aim is to sing ‘anti-Bob Roberts’ songs, arousing humanity in ourselves and reminding us that we are not alone in the world,” Robbins explained.
He invited the audience to the performance of his band Tim Robbins and The Rogues Gallery Band, taking place in the Karlovy Vary Theatre on Wednesday 4 July at 09.00 p.m. “Expect two hours of fun”, he promised. Tickets to the concert cost CZK 190.00 and can be purchased from 1 July at the main cash desk in the Thermal Hotel.
