The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival presents the films being shown in its two competition sections and in the Special Screenings section. The thirty-three films from five continents include 27 world premieres, 3 international premieres, and 3 European premieres. Thirteen of the filmmakers in this year’s main program have competed at the festival in the past, while nine directors are making their KVIFF debut.
The wide range of genres includes melodrama, dystopian sci-fi, romantic comedy, and documentary essay. “Of the roughly 1,500 submissions, my colleagues and I have chosen nearly three dozen brand new works of cinema that, taken as a whole, reflect our tastes, and thus our conviction that meaningful provocation and the desire to explore new forms of cinematic expression are not necessarily incompatible with audience accessibility,” says the festival’s artistic director, Karel Och.
