What if people were born from eggs and hibernated like a bear during the winter? A though-provoking piece The Human Hibernation, part of the Imagina section, was presented on Wednesday and invited audiences to unleash their imaginations.
Director Anna Cornudella Castro brought her debut film to Karlovy Vary after its success at the Berlinale festival. She mentioned right in the introduction that although it is a very modest film, she and her friends put a lot of tenderness and love into it. “The idea came from my thoughts about the world and how broken our bond with nature is. I wondered what would happen to people if their environment was uninhabitable, how they would survive. What would happen if people hibernated?” she explained during the debate. The poetic film was also inspired by an art video in which the respondents talk about the future in the present tense, and by careful observation of natural cycles.
While most of the diverse flora and fauna was filmed using almost documentary methods, the cows were an exception as their presence in the film has a mystical undertone. “It’s just a game with imagination. I was trying to imagine a different world, a world with different rules. The idea was to put humans and cows on the same level, as if they were as intelligent as us,” said the Spanish filmmaker.
First-hand brews throughout the year.
