Another View 2007 / Roz / Greece 2006
A film by Greek director Alexandros Voulgaris, who also plays the leading role, Roz is a meditation on the fear which accompanies life’s collisions. Vassilis Galis, whose mother abandoned him in childhood, writes letters to her in which he tries to express all the things weighing heavily on his soul.
“Pink is a film about someone’s thoughts,” says the director. We are all afraid of something when face-to-face with the realities of life. Vassilis Galis, who is raised only with his father and brother, is afraid of growing up. 11-year-old Snezana Tkachenko, the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, is afraid of mutual understanding. Movie star Sakis is frightened by feelings, and Emily the Irish girl worries about starting from nothing. The greatest fear of Agne the teacher is life itself. And then there is the father, who is daunted by words, and the mother, who dreads returning. All of these people, whose fates intermingle at different stages of Vassilis’ life, leave their mark on him. Sometimes only superficially, sometimes in a profound way that is never to heal. In his letters to his mother, who abandoned the family and only left her son the dog, named Roz (Pink), Vassilis tries to express the anxiety, pain, feelings, and hope that accompany his childhood and maturation.
