The film won the Special Jury Prize in Venice in 2007.
Bob Dylan is without a doubt one of today’s most influential artists. It’s not just that his songs are sought after by listeners spanning several generations – many such listeners tend to interpret the world and their own life according to their message. At the same time, few people have gone through as many twists of fate as Bob Dylan, who always tried with all his might to conceal whichever of his many masks belied his true face. When Todd Haynes resolved to take his life-long fascination with Dylan’s story to the screen, he opted for an exceptionally risky way of going about it, committing the portrayal of the singer’s character to six different actors at once. The result, however, exceeded expectations, and Haynes’ cubist portrait of one of the cultural icons of the 20th century, in which Heath Ledger, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett et al. take on the musician’s guise, grew into a compelling exploration of what determines the identity of a single person’s life.

Todd Haynes (b. 1961, Los Angeles) studied art at Brown University (1985). He founded the organisation Apparatus Production for the support of independent film in New York and then began making his own films. He gradually worked his way up to become one of the main stars of independent film and his original work has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Poison (1991), the story of three people who isolate themselves from society, took the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance festival; his distinctive tribute to the melodramas of Douglas Sirk Far from Heaven (2003) was honoured with several prizes at the Venice Film Festival. Haynes’ fictitious portrait of Bob Dylan I’m Not There (2007) ties in to his previous music film set in the days of glam-rock fever, Velvet Goldmine (1998), which took the award for Best Artistic Contribution at the IFF in Cannes.
