Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2010 / Die Standesbeamtin / Switzerland 2009
A Swiss romantic comedy that’s ripe for remake. Sophomore feature by scripter-director Micha Lewinsky centers on a small-town bureaucrat whose life is thrown for a loop when an old boyfriend pops up from her past. Full of running jokes, colorful supports and jabs at provincial Swiss mores.
A Swiss-German romantic comedy that’s ripe for remake. Sophomore feature by scripter-director Micha Lewinsky (Der Freund) centers on a small-town bureaucrat whose life is thrown for a loop when an old boyfriend pops up from her past. Hyperactive Rahel Hubli, who has a young son and an errant husband, works at the town hall. When she bumps into Ben Hofer, with whom she once had a pop duo, the torch she always held for him is reignited. Unfortunately, Ben is with his dumb actress girlfriend; even worse, they ask Rahel to perform their marriage ceremony. The ending can be seen from miles away, but Lewinsky’s script, full of running jokes, colorful supports and jabs at provincial Swiss mores, hardly flags.
