Not intended for kids, this animated thriller is a rarity even outside the South Korean film industry. The violent story brings together onetime schoolmates who reflect on school years that were anything but idyllic. Clearly, the bullying they suffered marked the two men more deeply than at first it seems.
Kyung-min and Jong-suk are former schoolmates who went their separate ways after graduation. One is a successful businessman, the other a washed-up writer. After meeting up again years later, they reminisce about their school days, and it’s no surprise that the bullying they suffered is the main topic of conversation. Back then, students known as "dogs” repeatedly humiliated those designated as "pigs.” Thus, when one of the victims stands up to a group of bullies he becomes the hope of every tyrannized outsider. During his struggle, however, as the last shred of fair play succumbs to the enemy’s heightened aggression, other dark deeds take place that are difficult to bring out even after 15 years. Perhaps this unexpected meeting will finally put things to rest. The movie joins the ranks of new Korean animated movies that reject the dominant trends of computer and 3D animation. Moreover, it makes no attempt to speak to a traditional youth audience, not only in terms of topic but also in the way it comments upon the social situation and focuses on the psychology of the characters; this is adult fare.

Sang-ho Yeun (b. 1978, Seoul) debuted with the short film D-Day (2000). His second short, The Hell: Two Kinds of Life (2006), brought the director his first award, while Love Is Protein (2008) opened the way to foreign festivals, including the competition at Santiago de Compostela. The King of Pigs is his feature debut. After premiering at Pusan, Asia’s top festival (for which he shot the official 2010 trailer), the film was recently screened in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.
