Variety's Ten Euro Directors to Watch 2012 / Iron Sky / Finland, Germany, Australia 2011
What’s not to like about a movie with Nazis from the moon invading Earth? The high concept behind sci-fi comedy Iron Sky is an immediate winner. Made by the Finnish filmmakers behind the oft-downloaded Star Wreck spoof series, pic can count on support from its small army of fan investors.
What’s not to like about a movie with Nazis from the moon invading Earth? With Udo Kier as the Fuehrer? The high concept behind sci-fi comedy Iron Sky is an immediate winner. Made by the Finnish filmmakers behind the oft-downloaded Star Wreck spoof series, pic can count on support from its small army of fan investors. Astronauts land on the moon in the year 2018 as a barely disguised campaign stunt to secure the re-election of the president of the United States. However, when they venture over the wrong moon hill, they come up against space-helmeted stormtroopers, sporting swastika armbands. Explicatory dialogue reveals that since 1945, a colony of escaped Nazis has been hiding out on the dark side of the moon, preparing for an invasion of their home planet that will establish the Fourth Reich as the new, new world order.

Timo Vuorensola (b. 1979) is a Finnish director and actor, in addition to singing lead for the industrial group Älymystö. With his own fan base, he has created an image as an imaginative artist who boldly and expressively combines diverse genres, occasionally even adopting the schemes of the most abject of B movies. At the same time, however, Vuorensola parodies them, even indulging in daring black humor. Beyond ridicule and any and all generic clichés, he also takes aim at contemporary politics and social relations. Most often he makes use of phantasmagoric sci-fi stories, surprising his admirers with top quality Hollywood effects. His three films to achieve cult status are Star Wreck IV: The Kilpailu (1996); Star Wreck V: Lost Contact (1997); and Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (2005). He spent several years working on the special effects for Iron Sky.
