An 18-year-old man has committed a grievous crime but gets the chance to start over. However, the local villagers can’t forget what happened, and it’s difficult to tell how seriously he, himself, is taking this second chance. This thought-provoking and suggestive film examines the boundaries of human tolerance and the persistent questions prompted by an action which is beyond our understanding. The film was screened at Cannes in the Cinéfondation section.
"I just want to understand,” says the documentarist who first observes, but then later hounds, a young man who has been released from a juvenile detention centre so that he can start over. However, the deep wounds he inflicted on the parents of his victim, and people’s compulsion to have a clear view of things, complicate the journey he has undertaken. Will he be able to drive away the dangerous traits of his own character? And will those around him and, by extension, also the viewers understand what actually happened? The film, whose atmosphere is enhanced by first rate music from Jelly Belly and Southpaw, doesn’t head for some kind of catharsis; instead it exhaustively monitors the situation, tries to break through, and ends up subjecting the audience to a constant sense of anguish. Similar approaches are familiar from Michael Haneke’s work while, in its muted tone, Tambylles edges towards the style of Christian Petzold or Benjamin Heisenberg. And if all of these filmmakers have something in common, it’s the fact that their ambiguous position is an asset in their films, not the result of an absence of creative nerve.

Michal Hogenauer (b.1984, Prague) has always been interested in film, and his amateur movies won several prizes. After working as a stand-in for Elijah Wood on the film Everything Is Illuminated, he decided to study film direction at Prague’s FAMU. He completed his bachelor’s degree with a dissertation on the work of Michael Haneke and the short film Children Watching Night Trains, which was screened in 2009 at the Premiere Plans festival in Angers and also won the main prize in the National Short Film Competition at Ostrava Kamera Oko (International Cinematographers Festival). He studied photography for a year at the Art Academy in Bergen, Norway. His graduate film Tambylles was screened at Cannes in the Cinéfondation competition. He is currently a programmer for the Fresh Film Fest and is working on the script for his feature-length debut.
