Coach Hnátek is possessed by a vision of advancing to the regionals; to achieve this goal he’s willing to berate the members of the team and to risk his own health. But it won’t be easy given the cantankerous bunch he was able to put together in his small Czech village. Based on the TV series of the same name, the film pushes the creative limits of the genre.
Josef Hnátek has been training his village football team for so long that even their rivals can sniff out their tactics well in advance. All the same, the coach’s ambition to have his team advance is nothing short of obsessive. If they do qualify, however, it won’t be because of their talent, but simply their devotion to football. But now their plans might be scuppered by a band of fairground operators who have installed themselves near the pitch. The film is a prequel to the well-known television series of the same name, whose quality is matched by the feature format presented here, relying on true-to-life characters who needn’t be comic at all costs or at the expense of credibility. The director also faithfully taps into the atmosphere of rural football, which reflects much more than the mere desire to beat the opponents from the next village. Sunday League – Pepik Hnatek’s Final Match thus not only captures a unique environment, but also accurately gauges it’s unforced humour to the pulse of the audience.

Jan Prušinovský (b. 1979, Hořovice, Czechoslovakia) began studying screenwriting and script editing at FAMU after completing his alternative military service. His college film Bubble Bath Is the Best (Nejlepší je pěnivá, 2005) not only earned him a series of awards, but kudos as a future talent of Czech filmmaking. He completed his course in his third year with the screenplay for the film Frankie Is a Womanizer (František je děvkař), which he rewrote for the big screen in 2008 and also presented at KVIFF. He worked on the scripts for several Czech films (e.g. the commercially successful Rafters / Rafťáci, 2006) and was assistant director on the set of Hřebejk’s Teddy Bear (Medvídek, 2007). As a lifelong football fanatic he began working on the highly successful television show "Sunday League” in 2009. Prušinovský’s current feature film is a prequel to the TV series.
