Forum of Independents - Competition 2012 / Love Me Not / Hong Kong 2011
Aggie and Dennis are old friends, connected by more than the flat they share. While Dennis is clear about being gay, Aggie is starting to be less so. With a natural flow, this relationship chronicle avoids crisis situations, enabling it to succeed as a sensitive look at the coexistence of two interesting characters.
Despite their mild differences, Aggie and Dennis share an apartment and a same-sex orientation. But it’s often hard to plan things ahead of time, and ruptures await them in areas of their lives where they would have least expected it. The movie sensitively portrays its characters over the course of several years yet manages to bear comprehensive witness to their cohabitation and to the times when they live apart. While leaving room for surprises, the film clearly expresses the characters’ natural closeness, enabling the viewer to understand why they get on so well together. The bonds established between other characters are no less natural, nor are the intergenerational relationships or the unforced cinephile allusions (as when Cannes’ festival jingle can be heard when the heroine dreams of making a successful film). Although there are multiple distressing situations and Aggie suffers from a palpable lack of fulfillment, the film emanates an unostentatious optimism, proving that the causes of life’s daily joys rest not in existential questions; on the contrary, they can be found in the most ordinary of things.
