Eighteen-year-old Shira grew up in an Orthodox Hasidic family in Tel Aviv. Her future is clear: she is to marry a promising young man of the same age. He feels that it’s too early for another marriage, though attractive Shira is the logical choice for a multitude of reasons. But the girl must decide between her mother’s wishes and the voice of her heart.… In this powerful yet subtle directorial debut, Rama Burshtein offers a parallel to the stories of Jane Austen: strong female characters who try to find their own way in a world of delimiting social conventions. And as in the novels of the English writer, her movie makes room for gentle humor and loving understanding between the main characters.
