Midnight Screenings 2013 / Frankenstein's Army / Netherlands, USA 2013
Last year saw mad scientist Viktor (Karel Roden) digging around in the brains of unfortunate communist and Nazi soldiers in the Mayrau mine near Karlovy Vary in an attempt to recreate the horrors of World War II. See for yourself whether his project crossed the bounds of sanity at a screening hosted by the Shockproof Film Festival.
For visitors to the festival in Karlovy Vary, we recommend a trip to the nearby Mayrau mine, where you will find not only a mining museum but, with some luck, you might just come across the mutilated bodies of Russian soldiers or randomly scattered human brains. It was here that Victor (Karel Roden) recently built his small Frankenstein’s Mill, where he applied a highly unusual therapy to war-ravaged communist and Nazi soldiers – for instance, attaching a fighter plane propeller to a soldier’s body or joining two different cerebral hemispheres together. But if you want to see a crazy scientist as he digs around in the exposed craniums of various victims and murderers, we suggest a midnight screening of the film that Richard Raaphorst shot at Mayrau. Cordially inviting you to attend are the programmers of the Shockproof Film Festival, whose representatives will be personally on hand at the screening.

Richard Raaphorst (b. 1971, Netherlands) studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, graduating in 1996 as the director of the short film Zombi 1 (1995). His primary career, however, has been as a conceptual and storyboard artist. He has collaborated among others with renowned horror movie producer and director Brian Yuzna. Since 1995, Raaphorst has been making independent shorts, most of them horror movies. In 2004, he began work on Worst Case Scenario, in which Germany sends an army of zombies to avenge a championship football defeat against the Netherlands. The film was never completed, and so Raaphorst’s feature-length debut came with Frankenstein’s Army.
