Documentary Films - Out of Competition 2013 / The Stone Roses: Made of Stone / United Kingdom 2013
"Look, if you let anyone else make this film, I’ll kill myself,” director Shane Meadows announced to cult Manchester rock band The Stone Roses. The band gave him the thumbs up and we now have before us an energetic documentary tracking the band’s reunion. Meadows survived, but will the feuding focus of his attention be able to do the same?
The so-called Madchester scene of the 1980s gave to Britain and the world bands such as New Order, Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. The last of these has been a lifelong passion for director Shane Meadows, whose upbeat documentary looks back at the band’s history, but largely focuses on the circumstances surrounding their reunion in 2012. After sixteen years’ silence, this comeback was just as unexpected as the erstwhile meteoric rise of a band which to this day enjoys cult status in Britain. The film clearly underlines the significance of the musicians, yet it also captures them as ordinary guys. The goofy punk rockers have matured into gents who like to relax with a nice cuppa during rehearsal but, as the gig approaches, we see the power begin to emerge. Although the film acknowledges the fact that nothing can actually beat being there itself, no viewer can fail to notice that The Stone Roses have lost none of their magic. In amongst the band’s fans, almost a quarter of a million of whom came together for a spectacular gig in Manchester, you might well recognise some of the characters familiar from Meadows’s feature films.

Shane Meadows (b. 1972, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire) is one of the most distinctive British directors working today. His films frequently address current issues relevant to his native country. Four of them have been screened at KVIFF, the first being Twentyfourseven (1997) with Bob Hoskins in the main role; the film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice IFF. This Is England (2006) won a Best British Film BAFTA. Also screened at KVIFF, the film gave rise to two follow-up series of the same name on which Meadows collaborated as scriptwriter and director. He has also shot dozens of shorts. He played in the band She Talks to Angels together with his friend, the actor and director Paddy Considine. Meadows describes the musicians featured in his documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone as having had a major impact on his life. The scripts for his films often involve the collaboration of Paul Fraser.
