Borderline Films: The First Ten Years 2013 / Reprise / Norway 2006
Erik and Phillip long to become successful writers. The publishers reject Erik as untalented, whereas Phillip’s manuscript is accepted, and almost overnight the young man becomes a representative of the Norwegian cultural scene. One of Scandinavia’s most striking talents, Trier’s Truffaut-influenced debut took Best Director at KVIFF 2006. Carte blanche: Josh Mond
Erik and Phillip long to become successful writers. The publishers reject Erik as untalented, whereas Phillip’s manuscript is accepted, and almost overnight the young man becomes one of the representatives of the Norwegian cultural scene. Six months later, Erik and some friends arrive at a psychiatric institute to take Phillip home after a long convalescence. Phillip has no intention of further pursuing the craft. But Erik continues taking stabs at writing and he tries to convince his friend to do the same. Trier’s debut can be understood as a delicately handled meditation on youth as a time full of promise, plans, and hope – one that gradually and sadly dwindles away under the strain of life’s trials. If the style of the narration seems reminiscent of the poetic works of the French New Wave, it’s no mistake. The director himself acknowledges the influence of François Truffaut, specifically his film Jules and Jim, in which he addresses weighty topics with beguiling ease.

Joachim Trier (b. 1974, Copenhagen) graduated from Britain’s National Film and Television School in 2000. He gained renown as a creator of short films, three of which – Procter (2002), Pieta (2000) and Still (2000) – were presented at more than 30 international film festivals and won numerous awards, including the prestigious Prix UIP and Kodak Short Film Bureau Award for best British and European short, which Procter won in 2002 at the Edinburgh festival. In addition, Trier directed commercials in Britain and Norway for Moland Film AS. Reprise is his feature debut; five years later he proved his undeniable talent with Oslo, August 31.
