Official Selection - Out of Competition 2003 / It Runs in the Family / USA 2003
The legendary Kirk Douglas, his famous son Michael and grandson Cameron come together on screen to project many of their own family situations into the story of the Gromberg clan.
The Grombergs are a successful American family: the oldest of them, Mitchell, used to be a partner in a respected legal firm, his wife Evelyn is his emotional support and the mediator between him and their son Alex, with whom Mitchell frequently comes into conflict. Alex is a middle-aged man trying, although not always succeeding, to play the good father, son and husband. His wife Rebecca is a psychologist endeavouring to combine her profession with her role as wife and mother of two sons. The elder son Asher, a somewhat rebellious school pupil, is currently trying to find his way in the complex world of love and sex. 11-year-old Eli is probably the most balanced member of the family. Three generations, each living their own life, each allergic to the others, but occasionally they meet up for family celebrations where they argue furiously and also have a laugh together. The Gromberg family is played by members of the famous Douglas acting clan and, doubtless, something of their real-life relationships is projected into this film. The self-sacrificing Evelyn is played by Kirk Douglas´ former wife Diana, and little Eli is played by the youngest of seven children from another famous family from the entertainment industry - Rory Culkin.
