Retrospective: 100 Years of Yasujiro Ozu 2003 / Tokyo monogatari / Japan 1953
This film about aging parents unsuccessfully visiting their busy children, is undoubtedly Ozu´s quintessential work, a story in which he convincingly portrays the breakdown between the generations, the loss of children´s respect for their parents, and the frenetic external world as contrasted with inner peace and beauty which is so very difficult to maintain.
Shukichi and Tomi Hirayama visit their son and daughter in Tokyo, but they are met with disappointment. Their busy children try to push them into taking a trip to a noisy spa in Atami. Only their son´s widow Noriko is willing to take care of them. After several plot complications, in the end they have no option but to return to their youngest daughter´s in Onomichi; the mother falls ill and dies soon after their return. Even at this most difficult of times, Shukichi´s only comfort is daughter-in-law Noriko, who stays to help him…. Without a doubt, Tokyo Story is Yasujiro Ozu´s quintessential and most famous work. This film, about the generation breakdown, also concerns the frenetic external world as contrasted with inner peace and beauty which is so very difficult to maintain.
