Tribute to Anonymous Content 2014 / Winter's Bone / USA 2010
In the opinion of many, Winter’s Bone was the best American film of 2010. Jennifer Lawrence was thrust well on her way to stardom after receiving an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of 17-year-old Ree, who goes looking for her missing father in the harsh world of Missouri’s Ozarks. The second film by talented Debra Granik took the Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance.
This raw drama was based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Woodrell, who calls his work "country noir”. The main character of the second film by the exceptionally talented Debra Granik is 17-year-old Ree, who must raise her younger siblings in near poverty. Her mentally ill mother sits around all day, while her father causes the family grief by mortgaging their home for bail and then disappearing. If Ree doesn’t find him within a week, they will lose the roof over their heads for good. She undertakes a difficult journey through the harsh landscape and meth underworld of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. Many critics called it the best American film of 2010, and Winter’s Bone earned two awards at Sundance and four Oscar nominations, among others for Best Film and Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence).

Debra Granik (1963, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) studied political science at Brandeis University, followed by film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she won her first award for the short film Snake Feed (1997). Granik subsequently expanded this film into a feature-length screenplay at a Sundance Institute directing and screenwriting workshop. Her debut Down to the Bone (2004) went on to win her a best directing award at Sundance. Also at Sundance, her second film, Winter’s Bone, received the Grand Jury Prize in the Dramatic Competition and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. This year, she completed the documentary film Stray Dog.
