How can they attend a demonstration and fall in love at the same time? The story of two brothers without much to do, yet every moment they are discovering something new about the world. In this playful picture, that world is described as ordinary, but it is also full of mystery – as well as binding limitations. Güeros took Best First Feature at this year’s Berlinale.
A film about small but important joys, failures and adventures, and the constraints limiting current-day Mexico. Tomás has lighter skin than his older brother Fede, and people frequently throw this fact in his face. Fede, nicknamed Sombra, lives in the south where Tomás comes to stay after their mother no longer knows how to deal with the boy. A student demonstration is taking place in town, which the brothers skip; during these sleepy days they’d rather focus their energies on looking for a mysterious musician who, so the story goes, suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and once reduced Bob Dylan to tears. The debuting director treats his young heroes with amiable understanding, and although he touches upon highly sensitive topics he never abandons his overarching playfulness. The film’s turbulent style seems to mirror the protagonists’ heightened senses – sure, maybe they don’t do much but neither are they set in their ways. The film is stylized to somewhat resemble a child’s perception of the world, which gradually forms and finds focus under the influence of events.

Alonso Ruiz Palacios (b. 1978, Mexico City) is a film and theater writer and director. He studied direction in his hometown and acting in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has shot TV documentaries and dramas for various stations, worked with the Discovery and National Geographic channels, and contributed screenwriting talents to several TV series. For the theater he has staged plays by Shakespeare, Stoppard, and Chekhov. In 2008 he wrote and directed Café Paraíso, winning Mexico’s annual Silver Ariel Award for Best Short Film before touring the festival circuit, including prestigious Clermont-Ferrand. He was awarded another Silver Ariel for his third short The Cú Bird’s Last Song. Güeros, his debut, won Best First Feature at this year’s Berlinale.
