Tribute to Ben Rivers 2014 / Sørdal / United Kingdom 2007
An abandoned, verdantly-located wooden house gradually merges with the landscape. What stories unfolded here before the people left? A silent film about the way an old building is able to tell its own story.
The man behind the camera is apparently the only person near some abandoned structures that are gradually being swallowed up by the surrounding landscape. But perhaps they are not as empty as they seem, indicating at the very least their surmised ability to relate stories from the past. The visuality of this silent picture evokes something akin to a diapositive sent to us from another world, a place where it is possible to mediate an exceptionally strong atmosphere. Rivers later returned to Norway, where this work was created, for the filming of his biggest project to date – the feature A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness.
