Tribute to Ben Rivers 2014 / House / United Kingdom 2005
A visit, fascinating in its simplicity, to an old, abandoned house whose near-empty yet still-eerie recesses we may secretly observe. The film evinces a fascination with the structure’s irrevocable demise, as well as with period genre cinema, whose magic the film draws out like the ghosts of the abandoned building.
Another visit to an abandoned house in which glimmers of light on layers of dust randomly illuminate the surviving traces of former human lives. In contrast to Rivers’ other works, the movie doesn’t inspire an investigation into the history of the structure and its inhabitants, crafting instead a generally applicable and powerful mood of decay and finality, which it observes with detachment and even respect. The film’s atmosphere has much in common with early, purely genre cinema, as reflected in spiritist moments in which a candle floats through the room.
