Czech Films 2013–2014 2014 / Krásno / Czech Republic 2014
Krásno is a lake located outside the town of Šumperk and also the focus of various questions raised by actor and stage professional Ondřej Sokol in his debut as writer-director. Could someone be behind the drowning of Michal’s mother? Will Michal and Adam get to the root of the mystery amid a spiral of bizarre events unfolding in a strangely deserted town? And what will the dejected heroes find out about themselves in the process?
Dejected Michal and his childhood friend Adam return to Šumperk where the body of Michal’s mother was found in the lake several years earlier. To this day he suspects his own father may have been responsible but the old man dies the very day the two friends return to their hometown. The place lives its own strange, empty life; time has stood still during the years the two men have been away – at least this is the impression they have. In this uncanny atmosphere the two protagonists increasingly get caught up in a spiral of weird events which might or might not have greater significance, but it’s important to fully experience them and, in doing so, to try to comprehend. With its wealth of innovative ideas and unexpected humour, the film openly looks to foreign models: we’ll find parallels with In Bruges or Nordic dramas with their touch of the bizarre. It’s not so much cynicism that the filmmakers conceal behind their derisive humour, as their endeavour to find levity in situations which appear to contradict it.
