The case of a mysterious murder in Louisiana investigated by a pair of offbeat detectives is reopened seventeen years later. Both men now have to delve into their dark and complex pasts in order to find out what really happened. Probing deep inside its protagonists’ characters, this TV phenomenon from HBO offers up a breathtaking crime spectacle with superb performances from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
It’s the mid-1990s and two detectives are assigned to investigate the mysterious ritual murder of an unidentified prostitute. Guided by strange symbols on the victim’s back, they end up in the desolate Louisiana lowlands. Fifteen years later, when everyone considers the case closed, new murders are discovered that are chillingly similar to the old crime. The two former investigators now have to delve into their complicated pasts, relive the dark circumstances of their original investigation, and face their complex personal lives. This phenomenal television series is a captivating detective saga whose surprisingly convoluted plot offers a fascinating journey into the disturbed workings of the human mind. The conflict between the two very different personalities offers a philosophical insight into basic questions of existence, morality and responsibility. The series’ success is undoubtedly due to its superb directorial vision, as well as the excellent performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
