Midnight Screenings 2014 / The Raid 2: Berandal / Indonesia, USA 2013
The elite police commando may have rid the high-rise of all its filthy rotten gangsters, but it turns out that several of the cops involved are corrupt themselves. Fast fists, sharp knives, and well-oiled guns are poised once again: There are plenty of evildoers here in need of some ass-kicking.
In 2011, the epic Indonesian action film The Raid: Redemption wowed audiences around the world. Director Gareth Huw Evans fulfilled the dreams of fans of the genre by offering them a meticulously arranged, uncompromising, non-stop bloodbath. So it is no wonder that dark clouds again hover over the slums of Jakarta. The eagerly awaited sequel picks up exactly where the previous film left off. The elite commando may have rid the high-rise of all Tama’s gangster filth, but the action revealed that several of the cops were corrupt. The raid’s hero, the incorruptible Rama, is thus given a special assignment to infiltrate and do away with the organized crime group. It’s a long way to the top of the chain, so the bloody journey towards justice begins in jail, where one of the mafia bosses’ sons is currently doing time. Fortunately there are plenty of evildoers in need of some ass-kicking, so the action-packed cinematic spectacle can begin.

Gareth Huw Evans (b. 1985, Hirwaun, Wales) studied scriptwriting for film and television at the University of Glamorgan, but currently works in Indonesia. In 2003 he filmed his first short film, Samurai Monogatari, and in 2006 he debuted with the low-budget thriller Footsteps (2006). A documentary project introduced him to the overtly physical Indonesian martial art of pencat silat. For Merantau (2009) he discovered actor and pencat silat master Iko Uwais, with whom he also worked on the highly successful The Raid Redemption (2011), which was shown at countless festivals and made it into regular cinema distribution in a dozen countries. Its sequel, The Raid 2: Berandal, was equally successful. Evans is currently working on the action thriller The Night Comes for Us, whose premiere is planned for next year, and a third installment of The Raid is also in the works.
