Another View 2014 / Alleluia / Belgium, France 2014
Gloria meets the charming Michel through an online ad. Sparks fly, and Gloria discovers that she will do anything to keep Michel’s love. The provocative director again delves deep into the human soul, exploring not only the purity of love but also uncontrollable passion and the pathological desire to possess and control. Inspired by true events, the film’s oppressive atmosphere is amplified by almost hallucinatory lensing and excellent performances.
Gloria lives alone with her daughter, having left her manipulative husband. One day, she answers an online personal ad. When she meets Michel, there is an immediate spark, and Gloria feels that she will do anything to hold onto this amazing love. But Michel is used to living off the money of the women he meets through his ads. The provocative and original Belgian director again delves deep into the human soul in search not only of the purity of love, but also of uncontrollable passion and the pathological desire to possess and control. Welz examines how far people are capable of going once they have begun to lose control over reality and over themselves. This exploration of psychological dependence within a relationship is told through a suggestive and oppressive atmosphere that is enhanced by almost hallucinatory lensing and by excellent performances from Laurent Lucas and Lola Dueñas. The story is inspired by a news report that shocked America in the years 1947-49.

Fabrice du Welz (b. 1972, Brussels) graduated from the Royal Conservatory in Liège and the INSAS film school in Brussels. His short film When You’re in Love, It’s Wonderful (Quand on est amoureux c’est merveilleux, 1999) was Welz’s springboard for his feature-length debut, the extravagant drama Calvaire (2004), which was screened during Critics’ Week at Cannes and as part of Karlovy Vary’s Focus on Belgian Film in 2010. His second film, Vinyan, was shown at Venice in 2008. His latest film, Alleluia, was shown during Directors’ Fortnight at this year’s festival in Cannes.
