Forum of Independents - Competition 2015 / Outre ici / Belgium 2015
A desolate mountainous region, a young couple exhausted from a long journey, an abandoned house discovered by chance, and finally the arrival of a mysterious stranger speaking an unfamiliar language – the director defly employs these ingredients to create suspense in a psychological drama compressed by time and space.
A young couple have been trekking for three months in a desolate mountainous region when they chance upon an abandoned house containing supplies of food and drink. Having only planned a short break there, Basile wants to continue his visionary quest to find Tolkien’s secret city of Gondolin, but Léa settles into the comfortable surroundings and insists on staying awhile. The days pass in pleasant inactivity, nevertheless, Basile, restless and haunted by nightmares, fearfully looks on as snow starts to fall on the mountain pass they will have to negotiate. One day a weather-beaten man turns up at the house, a hunter clearly used to walking in these severe conditions, but he speaks an unfamiliar language... The viewer might anticipate the customary plot developments involving three characters cut off from the outside world, yet the director doesn’t play this hand. He demonstrates that even without such devices he is able to create extreme tension, which heightens the atmosphere of pervasive hidden danger built upon frequent silences, lingering shots of cloud clusters and the towering mountain range, and the unsettling tones of an electric guitar.
