Each season of the year ushers in a different mood, the nature of which leading British experimenter Ben Rivers investigates in his latest, highly personal film. Although some of its images seem to have come from another world, their essence reveals something universal.
While winter offers the possibility of probing every corner of the house, spring brings life that burgeons to greater splendor with the advent of summer until the onset of autumn introduces a creeping uncertainty. Ben Rivers once again taps into the poetic quality of images and sounds that may not be related but which help create a unique mood overlaid with melancholy and intimacy. Fragments of liberal thought are composed into ingenuously playful yet intellectually rich forms. Things is a film which was made on the explicit understanding that the director was not to step outside his home during the year-long shooting.
