Patón is happily married and the captain of the local football squad, but at the age of thirty-five his career has come to an end. A gently comic story about how difficult it can be to make important decisions, even if you’ve got a loving family and devoted team-mates by your side. With its laid back affability and wisdom, the film draws us into a world of quiet heroes.
Patón is 35, he’s been playing football for a C-division club his whole adult life and, although he’s happily married, the fact that his sporting career is over will have far greater consequences than he first imagined. Without the regular league match schedule, the change of routine for this locally celebrated but otherwise little known footballer throws his everyday life into disarray. El Cinco is filled with flawed yet, for all that, more likeable heroes, which ensures the film great audience appeal. Moreover, it never becomes too intense, as suggested in the energetic but not excessive portrayal of the mini-dramas that accompany every football game. Here, there’s always a second chance at goal, and match injuries and scuffles with the wife and fellow players never have serious consequences. And it’s due to the film’s absence of cheap ploys that the protagonists earn our affection, making it much more than just an ordinary cheery comedy. The director finds a natural solidarity among his heroes, not only within the family but also on the pitch, where the potential to make big bucks is never an issue.
