Midnight Screenings 2015 / Nenasytná Tiffany / Czech Republic 2015
A rube named Pepa robs cottages for cash and spends his free time swilling rum at fourth-rate establishments. The discovery of a strange video recording points him to a place where he’ll find a treasure of immense value. The mysterious place in northern Bohemia, however, awakens avarice far and wide and, seemingly, it’s got a plan for all those who turn up.…
Pepa is a simple-minded loser. Besides drinking cheap booze in dive bars, he spends most of the time roaming the countryside and robbing holiday cottages. During one of these adventures, he comes across a lost video camera whose original owner had found something that might just keep Pepa financially secure for the rest of his life: Buried somewhere in the ground is a treasure of unimaginable worth. Pepa cannot resist this tempting vision of easy money, and it soon destroys what little respect for moral and social taboos was left in him. A race for the treasure ensues, with more and more people drawn into it. However, it would seem that the unnerving location has its own plans for them. This fresh directorial debut expertly works with hyperbole to create an allegory about the dark side of human nature that will entice audiences with the uncompromising manner in which it combines elements of “low” genres with a unique story about the consequences of unfettered boorishness.

Andy Fehu (b. 1986) is making his feature film debut as a director, but he is already an established figure on the Czech amateur and semi-professional film scene. His short films such as Slepá kolej (Dead End, 2005) and Mikulášská (St. Nicholas, 2006) are often characterized by caustic social criticism. In his more recent films, however, he has increasingly played with the conventions of the horror genre. Andyho film (Andy’s Film, 2009) took a fresh approach to the category of found footage films, and he later incorporated fantasy elements into Jež (Sea Urchin, 2011). He is currently completing his bachelor degree course at FAMU’s film editing department. His feature-length debut The Greedy Tiffany (2015) provides definitive proof that Fehu is a distinctive talent of Czech cinema whose work emanates a strong auteur style without succumbing to cheap and passing trends.
