A young alcoholic arrives for treatment at a convent-cum-sanatorium run by nuns. After falling in love with one of them he quickly realizes that the signs of saintliness she evinces betray that she is no ordinary woman. This dark, dramatic, and dreamlike picture was premiered at Korea’s Jeonju IFF.
Jeong-woo is an alcoholic who has been admitted to a Christian convent for treatment. Although not normally permitted, his mother arranged an exemption that allows him to spend the winter there. As the only patient, he soon succumbs to a sense of loneliness – the convent’s strict rules do not offer much in the way of stimulation and he fails to become friends with the nuns. Eventually, however, one of them grows close to him. But Maria is no ordinary individual. She has visionary dreams and betrays signs of saintliness. Eventually, a second patient is admitted – a strange hunter who violates the convent’s rules and leads Jeong-woo down the wrong path. This dark, dramatic and enigmatic film is set within the cheerless confines of the convent’s walls, the snowy forests, and the urban landscape. Audiences are allowed ample room for interpreting the plot and the characters’ motivations on their own.
