Another View 2015 / Comoara / Romania, France 2015
Costi lives with his family in Bucharest and enjoys reading the story of Robin Hood to his little boy. One day one of his neighbors tells him he’s pretty sure that there’s some buried treasure in his grandparents’ yard. If Costi helps him borrow a metal detector and is willing to help him search for it, then they’ll split whatever they find. A minimalist fairy tale about fulfilling childhood dreams that was awarded in this year’s Un Certain Regard section at the festival in Cannes.
Costi leads a tranquil life with his family in Bucharest. At night he likes to read the story of Robin Hood to his little boy. One day his neighbour pays him a visit and tells him that he’s pretty sure there’s some treasure buried in his grandparents’ garden. If Costi helps him hire a metal detector and joins in the search, then they’ll split whatever they find. Costi is sceptical at first, but his fairytale loving soul and the prospect of an easy reward drive all doubts aside and the pair set out together on their adventure. The result brings surprises not only for the treasure hunters, but also for viewers of this minimalist, concise and drily humoured story, which allows for various interpretations. Corneliu Porumboiu is today one of Romania’s best known directors; practically all his films have won international awards ever since his debut secured the Caméra d’Or at Cannes in 2006. And The Treasure is no exception, recently taking away Cannes’ Talent Prize in Un Certain Regard’s competition.

Corneliu Porumboiu (b. 1975, Vaslui, Romania) studied at the National University of Theater and Film in Bucharest (2003). His shorts Gone with the Wine (Pe aripile vinului, 2002) and A Trip to the City (Calatorie la oras, 2003), and the medium-length Liviu’s Dream (Visul lui Liviu, 2003) – which discusses the abortion ban under Ceauşescu as a backdrop to the story of a young man, his aspirations and the notion of truth – brought him several international prizes, including a Cinéfondation Award at Cannes in 2004. 12:08 East of Bucharest (A fost sau n-afost?, 2006), his feature film debut which won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes, was screened in KVIFF’s East of the West competition in 2006. He triumphed again at Cannes with two subsequent films, Police, Adjective (Poliţist, adjektiv, 2009 – Un Certain Regard Jury Prize) and The Treasure (2015 – A Certain Talent Prize, Un Certain Regard).
