Documentary Films - Competition 2004 / Anderer Herbst / Germany, Poland 2004
This poetic documentary steeped in melancholy is a testimony of the director’s return to his native Poland. An exceptionally personal journey against the flow of time mixes memories and dreams with dismal slices of post-Communist reality.
A young filmmaker working in Germany returns to his native Poland by means of a visual verbal poem. Animated memories, dreams and words encounter slices of raw reality and together they form a melancholy testimony about his new-found home. “To me, this film means a return, an encounter and at the same time, a farewell,” confides the director. With the gradual alternation of shots underpinned by a poetic commentary, there is a strengthening of the feeling of scepticism felt when looking at the dismal reality of post-Communist Eastern Europe “suffering” from market economics.
