Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2004 / Shouf shouf habibi! / Netherlands 2004
Amsterdam-set comedy centred on a family of Moroccan immigrants, one of whose sons is a hopelessly confused slacker.
Both laughs and pathos are milked from the ups and downs of keeping home and hearth together in a foreign land in Shouf shouf habibi! Broad comedic strokes and cross-cultural issues leaven the overplotted story of a Moroccan brood coping in contempo Holland, which may explain pic´s record-setting opening weekend in late January. Twenty-year-old Abdullah, or Ab (Mimoun Oaissa), doesn´t know what he´ll do for a living: when an office job doesn´t pan out, he participates in a bank robbery with a trio of chums that goes spectacularly wrong. No-holds-barred humor includes a bit where Ab´s convinced he can become an American movie star because post-9/11 Hollywood will be looking for Middle Eastern talent. Perfs are vibrant overall.
