Dance for the Camera 2004 / Dialoge´99/II / Germany 2004
An exciting interaction between architecture and dance took place in 1999 when works by Sasha Waltz were performed inside the newly built and still uninhabited Jewish Museum in Berlin. The metaphors of architect Daniel Libeskind’s building seem translated into flesh and blood as the delicate subject of the Holocaust is reflected in Waltz’s choreography.
On June 11, 1999, seventeen international dancers performed a set of choreographic sketches by German dance phenomenon Sasha Waltz (the daughter of an architect) inside the newly built and still uninhabited Jewish Museum in Berlin. One can hardly imagine a more exciting location for an interaction between dance and architecture. The metaphors of architect Daniel Libeskind’s building seem translated into flesh and blood as the delicate subject of the Holocaust is reflected in Waltz’s choreography. Filmmakers Dirk Szuzies and Ferdinand Teubner shot the only existing footage of this unique event. Now, at last, a wider public may see the results of Waltz’s visually thrilling experiment, made in collaboration with sound artist Hans Peter Kuhn and costume designer Bernd Skodzing.
