Tribute to Jafar Panahi 2001 / Ayneh / Iran 1997
All the other children have already gone home from school, but Mina’s mother hasn’t come for her. The little girl decides to go home by herself, but she doesn’t know the town very well and doesn’t even know which bus to take. In the middle of the film the viewer realises that this is actually a film within a film: Mina is tired of doing what the director tells her and she doesn’t want to hassle with microphones and cameras anymore. So she pulls off her obligatory scarf and heads to town, this time truly taking responsibility for herself. From this moment on the film crew adopts a hidden camera approach. . . . The film won the Golden Leopard at the 50th Locarno IFF, the Special Jury Prize and Best Director at the 11th Singapore IFF, the Golden Tulip at the 17th Istanbul IFF, the Eisenstein Magic Crystal Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 7th Arsenál festival in Riga.
