Documentary Films in Competition 2002 / Meantime in Grez / Sweden 2002
A twelve-minute minidrama about the impact the September 11th attack on the USA had on the sleepy little French town of Grez-sur-Loing; a statement concerning the clashing realities of the European countryside and a catastrophe which happened thousands of miles away.
In the sleepy little French town of Grez-sur-Loing the bakery is first to open its doors in the morning and the local bar is last to close up at night. From a window, the camera pans over life on the street: a kid juggling in a window of the house opposite, an old man shopping, the ever-present regulars at a local restaurant disturbed only by the movements of a cat. But this dreamy idyll is disturbed by a short SMS communicating news of last September’s World Trade Center disaster. With suitable restraint, the film records the clash between daily life in the French countryside and a catastrophe which happened thousands of miles away; it also bears witness to the effect of fear on the mind of the individual.
