The endeavours of small Siberian peoples to foster their own national revival by developing museums, exploiting folklore and encouraging renewed belief in magic, prompt new questions. The result is a paradoxical collision: the spontaneity of shamanistic tradition is incompatible with the “pragmatic” requirements of archivists.
