The arrival of a new girl at school turns teenager Naama’s life upside down. The time they spend together allows her to escape her family and home commitments, and also to discover her awakening sexuality. A portrait of rebellious youth and the perennially bittersweet experience of first love.
Seventeen-year-old Naama spends her free time consuming alcohol, experimenting with drugs and loafing about with her friends. She doesn’t get much peace at home – her fretful mother and neurotic father often argue and, after the disappearance of her older sister, the tension in the family gets much worse. The languorous timelessness of her uniform days is unexpectedly interrupted by the arrival of new girl Hershko, who makes a big impression on Naama with her infectious free-spiritedness and her mesmerising brassy beauty. In the intimacy of the girls’ rooms and to the pulsating rhythm of urban nightlife, Naama starts to discover her sexuality, but she also reaches the outer limits that will determine her adult life from this point on. The debuting Israeli director set her portrait of rebellious youth at home in the present, in a country that wholly condemns any form of otherness. Here she relates a boldly romantic story of the perennially bittersweet experience of first love, and this with a sincerity and immediacy which add to the charm and authenticity of the piece.

Michal Vinik (b. 1976, Haifa, Israel) studied screenwriting and direction at Tel Aviv University’s Film and Television Department, where she currently teaches as well. Her short films Bait (2009) and Reality Check (Srak, 2011) were screened at Locarno and Sundance, and received awards both in Israel and further afield. Her debut Barash (2015) had its world premiere at San Sebastián and won three prizes at the Haifa IFF and Best Film at Outview, Greece’s LGBTQI film festival. The director is currently putting together her second feature film, Christina’s Child.
