East of the West - Competition 2016 / Kamper / Poland 2016
This acerbic relationship comedy about a young married couple draws together the sad truths about the difficulties of intimate relationships that have lost their initial passion but have yet to submit to stereotypes. This Polish directing debut provides a sensitive generational perspective with a catchy soundtrack.
Thirtysomething Kamper has a beautiful wife he’s in love with, a large apartment, a cool car, and a dream job. But then it turns out that his wife is unfaithful, he no longer cares about being head of videogame development, and responding passionately to this unexpected crisis is simply unwise. In his effort to understand where he went wrong and how to fix it, Kamper realizes he has just two choices: he can grow up and get over himself or he can start over alone. This entertaining picture, Łukasz Grzegorzek’s directorial debut, treats those sad realizations that come when we stand on the threshold of true adulthood and are forced to review our past decisions, including those involving old loves. The director cast prospective talents (Marta Nieradkiewicz, Justyna Suwała – Body) in his optimistic yet uncompromising generational offering, as well as Polish movie star Jacek Braciak, whose compelling role as the lover is one of the film’s highlights. The original score was composed by stellar Polish hip hop duo Czarny and Pezet.

Łukasz Grzegorzek (b. 1980) graduated in law from Warsaw University and trained for a career as a professional tennis player. After moving into film he spent the next ten years learning the ins and outs of film and script editing while creating television trailers for B movies, blockbusters, and art house fare. In his debut work Kamper (2016), which he directed, produced, edited, and wrote, he offers up an image of his peers, a generation desperately avoiding adulthood.
