Summertime in Paris. Fifteen-year-old Vincent lives with his mother Marie but is angry and frustrated because he doesn’t know who his father is. Without a thought for his devoted mum, he sets out to find him. His quest acquires unexpected dimensions and eventually leads him to a major publishing company directed by the arrogant and fiendish Oscar Pormenor. Here, Vincent meets Oscar’s reprobate brother Joseph, and the two form a meaningful relationship that helps them discover who they really are. The distinctive writer-director separates the story of his anachronistic yet innovative film into chapters inspired by scenes from the Bible. In meticulously composed shots he combines declamatory acting with grotesque expression, high art with low – all enhanced by hearty performances from the outstanding cast: Natacha Régnier, Fabrizio Rongione, Mathieu Amalric, Maria de Medeiros, and Victor Ezenfis as Vincent.

Eugène Green (b. 1947, New York City) is a French filmmaker, dramatist and author. Since 1969 he has been living in Paris, and there he studied literature and art history. He is a specialist in Baroque theatre and has instructed many actors in the art of Baroque expression and declamation. His films are regularly screened and applauded at international film festivals. Green gave his debut in 2001 with Toutes les nuits, which won the Prix Louis Delluc as Best First Film. This was followed by Le monde vivant, screened during Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2003 and later at festivals in London and Lisbon. His next three films Le pont des arts (2004), La religieuse portugaise (2009) and La sapienza (2014) were presented at Locarno. His latest offering Le fils de Joseph was included this year in Berlin’s Forum. His filmography also contains the documentary Faire la parole (2015).
