East of the West - Competition 2016 / Päevad, mis ajasid segadusse / Estonia 2016
Allar, 27, and his friends spend their lives in their Estonian small town goofing off, getting drunk, and driving as if there’s no tomorrow. When one of their outings ends in an accident, Allar begins to reflect on his life. The quest to find meaning, however, is full of twists and turns… With the help of bold music and visuals, the debuting Estonian director takes the viewer on a dynamic ride through the wild nineties, while also following the struggles of a searching mind.
A hot summer at the end of the 1990s. Allar is slowly approaching his thirties, and he and his friends pass the time in their small Estonian town goofing off, verbally harassing girls, getting drunk at local parties, and driving as if insane. One such diversion, however, ends in an accident that leads Allar to reflect on his life and to try to start living more meaningfully. But the road to finding life’s meaning has myriad twists and turns… With the help of bold music and visuals, the debuting Estonian director takes the viewer on an energetic ride through the wild nineties. But the film also records the journey of a searching mind as it wrestles with a sense of life’s futility. The movie landed fourth place – during its first weekend in Estonian theaters – on the list of top domestic box-office hits of the past two decades, and it’s safe to say that we’ll be hearing from talented director Triin Ruumet in the future.
