Another View 2016 / Tramontane / Lebanon, France, Qatar, United Arab Emirates 2016
While searching for his roots across his native Lebanon, a young blind musician and singer named Rabih must struggle through an unexpectedly thick web of half-truths, disinformation, and lies. Composed with sensitivity and imbued with tenderness, this debut from a talented filmmaker offers an unforced invitation to contemplate the identity of the individual within a socio-geographical context. The film premiered in the Critics’ Week at Cannes.
Rabih, a young and talented blind musician searching for his roots throughout Lebanon, must contend with an unexpectedly dense tangle of half-truths, disinformation, and lies. The reason: during the seemingly banal task of applying for a passport, the police call into doubt the authenticity of his ID card. When he confronts his mother and uncle, he encounters a strange silence. With a determination that minimizes his disability, he sets out on a journey towards a fateful discovery. This talented filmmaker’s feature debut, sensitively composed and infused with a sense of tenderness, offers an unforced invitation to contemplate the identity of the individual within a socio-geographical context. The world of Tramontane has its own specific, meditative rhythm, saturated with the urgent melancholy of Rabih’s music. The film, which was presented as a work in progress at last year’s KVIFF, premiered as part of Critics’ Week at this year’s festival in Cannes.
