War rages in an unnamed West African country. As news spreads of the government’s fall, groups of rebels take over the chaos-ridden country, showing no sign of mercy for the frightened but undaunted inhabitants. Eight-year-old Agu falls into the hands of one of the guerrilla units. Under the leadership of the authoritarian commander, he is subjected to a series of initiation rituals intended to turn him into a fearless child warrior. Will the gruelling marches and bloody rampages ever come to an end? Is there any chance that Agu will return to the life of a normal boy? Based on the novel of the same name by Nigerian doctor and sociologist Uzodinma Iweala, Beasts of No Nation offers an uncompromising look at the loss of humanity, whose rediscovery under such extreme conditions is nearly impossible. The film’s power is further amplified by its confident and pure style and the dynamic storytelling, which convincingly portrays a child’s experience. Beasts of No Nation is another conformation of Fukunaga’s meticulous directorial approach.

Cary Joji Fukunaga (b. 1977, Oakland, California) studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His work as a screenwriter, director, and cinematographer has taken him all over the globe – beyond the Arctic circle, to Haiti and to West Africa. In 2005, the Sundance festival screened his short directorial debut Victoria para Chino, for which he also wrote the screenplay. The film won more than 20 international awards, including a student Oscar and special mention from BAFTA Los Angeles. Both his feature-film debut Sin nombre (2008 – awards for directing and cinematography at Sundance) and his subsequent adaptation of the classic novel Jane Eyre (2011) were shown at Karlovy Vary. Visitors to KVIFF 49 could also see Fukunaga’s series “True Detective” (2014).
