Czech Films 2016–2017 2017 / Jak blízko tomu jsem / Czech Republic 2016
Work, friends, home. What constitutes mind-numbing routine for some people is, for 26-year-old Petr, an opportunity to contemplate the everyday life around him. In Václav Hrzina’s film this young man will perhaps never say what he really wants but, occasionally, in the silence, you can hear what he’s thinking.
Twenty-six-year-old Petr lives in Prague, where he works for a decorating firm. He spends his free time with friends, mostly chatting about ordinary things. It’s a quiet life and there’s not much that ruffles his feathers. But Petr doesn’t really mind; he’s content in his role as a perceptive observer of the familiar city around him. By monitoring apparently trivial episodes, director Václav Hrzina pieces together an image of a young man who perhaps will never say what he really wants. But occasionally, in the silence, you can hear what he’s thinking.
