If you know where to look for them you can quickly be rolling in clover. But you can’t be afraid to get a little dirty. The reference here is to moldavite, a semiprecious stone buried underground where two diggers are itching to get at it – each for their own very different reasons… An adventure drama by Dan Wlodarczyk in which Southern Bohemia is transformed into a small-scale Wild West.
It’s important to know where to look for them. And also who to sell them to. These words refer to moldavites, semiprecious stones found in Southern Bohemia, most likely having arrived on a meteorite. But Pavel, a geology student, doesn’t dig for profit. He and his wife Karolína are just in the process of setting up their apartment when the doorbell rings. It’s longtime friend Kačmar come to find out if they’re interested in launching an illegal digging operation – large-scale and for money. Pavel’s moral resistance, it turns out, crumbles rather feebly… Dan Wlodarczyk’s adventure drama turns in part on viewer expectations of how dramatically the enterprise will go south, but also on the extent of Kačmar’s toxic effect on the young couple’s lives. Yet Wlodarczyk’s loose adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jiří Hájíček also reflects social undertones from the border region. At the same time, the filmmakers posit Southern Bohemia as a small-scale Wild West, trapped beyond time, where a few people experience their own version of gold fever. A true hint of adventure is something we don’t see very often in Czech cinema.

Dan Wlodarczyk (b. 1967, České Budějovice, Czechoslovakia) studied Czech and history at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University before graduating in documentary filmmaking from Prague’s Film Academy (FAMU) in 1996. He has made roughly 20 documentaries that reveal an interest in subcultures and alternative lifestyles, including Weed (1993), which looks at issues concerning soft drug users, From A to A and Backwards (1994) about anarchists, Bulldog Boys (1996) about skinheads, and Life in an Order (2004) on being a nun. He debuted in features with The Indian and the Nurse (2006), presented in its international premiere in the East of the West Competition (KVIFF 2006) and awarded at the festival in Łagów, Poland, and at the Cottbus fest. As a director working in television he has participated in various successful series.
