Plumber Luboš can repair anything, but attempting any meaningful social interaction with the inhabitants of the village of Tuchlovice is but a pipe dream. And he’s a burden on his despairing mother, who wants her forty-year-old son to settle down as soon as possible. In his comedy, director Tomáš Vorel once again focuses on the microcosm that is the Czech village.
Luboš Cafourek is a man of eccentric habits. At forty, he’s still living with his mother, whom he leaves only to go and fix a neighbour’s leaking pipe or unblock a drain. Luboš is a plumber but he never charges enough for his work. His mum wants him out of the house, but things aren’t that simple – Luboš’s relationships with women always end in a washout... After successful films such as Out of the City and To the Woods, director Tomáš Vorel once again homes in on the microcosm that is the Czech village, filling it with quirky, amusing figures from among the local populace. Nevertheless, he doesn’t view the contemporary village as an idyllic place where time has stood still: Some of the inhabitants are outright racists and one of Luboš’s customers has to put up with a violent husband. In his choice of lead, Tomáš Vorel provides an opportunity for commercial actor and entertainer Jakub Kohák, for whom the ungainly nitwit with the defenceless gaze is his first major film role.

Tomáš Vorel (b. 1957, Prague), director, screenwriter and occasional actor (long-term association with Sklep theatre). Following a series of amateur films and direction studies at FAMU, he debuted with the story showcase The Prague Five (1988). His second film, the unconventional period musical Smoke (1990), is today considered one of the most remarkable Czech films in recent decades. He established VorelFilm in 1995, whose first offering was the acerbic comedy Stone Bridge (1996). The feature film Out of the City (2000) gave rise not only to the film To the Woods (2012) but also to the documentary Way Out (2002), which follows the lives of five individuals. Like Vorel’s other films, the slapstick comedy The Elf (2005) is also portrayed via distinctive artistic stylisation. His comedies The Can (2007) and Uni (2014) were likewise huge hits with audiences.
