When several giant ships of unknown origin appear at over a dozen locations on Earth, top teams of scientists set out to study them. The American team is headed by physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), who join forces in order to show that the extraterrestrial visitors are a threat to mankind only if we fail to communicate with them. One of the most original science fiction movies of recent years, Arrival cemented director Denis Villeneuve’s position as one the most closely watched directors working today.
When several giant ships of unknown origin appear at over a dozen locations on Earth, top teams of scientists set out to study them. But the alien visitors’ intentions remain unclear, and the leaders of the world’s major powers are rapidly running out of patience. Wouldn’t it be safer to take decisive measures and get rid of these foreign vessels and their crews once and for all in order to avoid an impending global crisis? The American team is headed by physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), who join forces to show that the extra-terrestrial visitors are a threat to mankind only if we fail to communicate with them. One of the most original science fiction movies of recent years, Arrival contemplates the power of shared language while investigating how easily fear of the unknown can incite impulsive and unwarranted aggression. The picture cemented director Denis Villeneuve’s position as one the most interesting directors working today.

Denis Villeneuve (b. 1967,Trois-Rivières, Canada) first garnered international attention with his medium-length documentary REW-FFWD (1994) about life in the ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica. In 1998 he shot his first feature August 32nd on Earth, which premiered at Cannes and was subsequently screened at 35 other festivals around the globe. This was followed by the equally successful outings Maelström (2000), Next Floor (2008, short), Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), all of which were shown at Karlovy Vary in 2011 when the festival overviewed his work. Villeneuve’s subsequent films have been shot in the USA. Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013) and Sicario (2015) contain elements typical of movie thrillers, as did the science fiction film Arrival (2016), but his movies blend the original flair of a true auteur with genre conventions. For these reasons, Villeneuve’s upcoming projects – a sequel to Blade Runner and a remake of David Lynch’s cult film Dune – are among the most anticipated movies today.
